Important Info for Riders Using a Motorcycle Supplied by PDC
PDC Motorcycles – Ownership & Registration
(Important information for riders using a PDC-sourced motorcycle)
For riders who would like to use a PDC-prepared motorcycle on the Paris–Dakar Challenge, the process below explains how ownership, registration and administration are handled. It is straightforward, fully compliant, and we guide you through each step.
Ownership & Registration
For border crossings, registration and insurance compliance, riders using a PDC-sourced motorcycle must be the legal owner of the motorcycle they ride on the trip.
This means:
-
the V5C (logbook) is transferred into your name
-
you are the legal owner and registered keeper of the motorcycle
-
the motorcycle is insured in your name for UK and EU road sections
This structure ensures a clear and compliant legal position throughout the journey.
Why This Structure Is Used
Using a rider-owned motorcycle allows for:
-
smooth border crossings in Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and The Gambia
-
fully valid UK and EU road insurance in the rider’s name
-
avoidance of complications associated with hired or loaned vehicles abroad
-
straightforward DVLA, customs and shipping administration
-
a clear and transparent legal position for all parties
This is a commonly used and well-established approach for overseas riders travelling on UK-registered motorcycles.
Support During the Expedition
Riders using a PDC-sourced motorcycle receive full priority support throughout the trip.
PDC will:
-
prepare the motorcycle before departure
-
provide mechanical assistance, tools and spares
-
manage repairs or recovery if required
-
provide full logistical support via the support vehicle
-
manage border processes, shipping and expedition logistics
This level of support is greater than that provided to riders bringing their own motorcycles.
Insurance Administration
As part of trip administration, PDC assists riders using a PDC-sourced motorcycle with arranging appropriate UK and EU road insurance in the rider’s name. We guide you through the process and handle the practical paperwork as part of the overall expedition preparation.
Rider Responsibilities
As the owner and rider of the motorcycle, you are expected to:
-
ride responsibly and within the law
-
carry out basic daily checks (oil, chain, tyres, etc.)
-
report any issues promptly to the PDC support team
You are not responsible for mechanical repair costs, parts or labour during the expedition.
Wear, Damage & Repairs
This is a long overland journey and normal wear is expected. PDC will not charge riders for:
-
cosmetic damage
-
fair wear and tear
-
mechanical repairs, parts or labour
If a serious issue occurs, PDC will manage the repair or recovery to keep the expedition moving.
In Summary
If you choose to use a PDC-sourced motorcycle:
-
you will be the legal owner and registered keeper of the motorcycle
-
the motorcycle will be insured in your name for UK and EU road sections
-
PDC provides preparation, priority support, spares and logistics throughout
-
all registration, border and expedition administration is handled with our guidance
